4-H Small Animal Field Day Brings Learning, Laughter, and Circus Fun

County 4-H Small Animal Field Day

A Cheerful Morning at the Fairgrounds
On Saturday morning, the County Fairgrounds was filled with energy and excitement. Families and kids arrived ready for the 4-H Small Animal Field Day. Voices and laughter echoed through the barns as animals were carried in. More than 100 kids participated, eager to learn and prepare for the county fair next month.

Pygmy Goats in the Spotlight
Outside in the goat barn, pygmy goats were guided through showmanship practice. Volunteers demonstrated how to lead, position, and groom the animals. Children followed along, learning tips for presenting their goats at the fair. Parents watched quietly, proud of the confidence their kids were building.

Rabbits and Cavies Take the Stage
Inside the big sale barn, rabbits and cavies were prepared for showmanship practice. Volunteer judges offered pointers and encouragement. Kids learned to improve their routines while having fun. The poster contest and breed ID tables were set up for everyone to see. The circus-themed costume contest brought laughter as rabbits and cavies showed off colorful outfits.

A carrot race added excitement. Each animal was given a piece of carrot peel. Some ate eagerly, some were hesitant, and one large rabbit finished its piece quickly, delighting the crowd.

Poultry Practice with a Twist
Live poultry could not attend this year because of bird flu. Instead, children practiced with stuffed animals. Plush hens, toy parrots, and even a dinosaur were used to learn showmanship skills. Judges offered guidance and advice. The poultry costume contest also brought smiles, with creative circus-themed outfits on display.

Games, Medals, and Activities
Other areas of the barn offered games and learning stations. Ring toss, scavenger hunts, and medal testing gave kids a chance to participate in different ways. Medal testing allowed youth to demonstrate knowledge in rabbits, cavies, poultry, and pygmy goats. Younger children had activities designed just for them, ensuring that everyone could join the fun.

Closing the Day with Fun and Learning
Ribbons, prizes, and goody bags were handed out at the end of the day. Volunteers, parents, and kids all shared in the success. Confidence grew, skills were practiced, and memories were made. The event reflected the true spirit of 4-H—learning, teamwork, and enjoyment in a safe and supportive environment.
